Borough councils that treat moths

London is unusual: several boroughs still run their own pest control and include clothes moths, usually as an insecticide treatment over one to four visits. Lambeth and Hammersmith and Fulham ask you to leave the home during treatment and return at least three hours later, with a second visit about two weeks on.

A council visit is often the cheapest option. A private firm can usually come sooner, offers heat as well as spray, and treats businesses, lets and large homes.

BoroughMoth treatment
Hammersmith and Fulham£150 for 1 visit, up to 3 rooms
CamdenFrom £172.22 (1 bed) to £375.97 (5 bed), 1 visit
Lambeth£189.60 for up to 2 visits, 2 rooms
Haringey£199, visits included
Kensington and Chelsea£354.40 for 4 visits, 1 to 2 rooms

Renting, shared houses and mansion blocks

Moths move between rooms, and in a converted house or block of flats they can come from a neighbour's carpet, a shared loft or an old bird nest in the roof space. The British Pest Control Association suggests checking lofts and chimneys for nests, which house moths use. Where a building is affected, treating one flat alone may not hold, so it is worth telling the landlord or managing agent early.

If you rent, raise it in writing. Shelter explains when the landlord must deal with pests. If the cost falls to you, a council service or a spray course is usually the lower-cost route; heat suits large or repeat problems.

Moth control in London: questions

Does my London council treat moths?

Some do. Camden, Hammersmith and Fulham, Haringey, Kensington and Chelsea and Lambeth all list moth treatment on their price pages, from £150 to £354.40 in October 2026. Others offer no insect service, so check your own borough's pest control page.

How much does moth treatment cost in London?

Private firms charge roughly 20 to 30% more in London than in the rest of the country: about £140 to £310 for one room and £340 to £590 for a whole home with a spray course. Heat treatment from one London firm starts at £534 for a studio or one-bed flat.

I rent in London. Who pays for moth treatment?

Shelter says a landlord in England must deal with pests that were there when you moved in, or that come from disrepair the landlord is responsible for. You may be responsible if something you did brought them in. Moths are not covered specifically, so tell your landlord in writing and keep photos of the damage.
